The Open Media Framework (OMF) file format is a cross-platform file format designed to facilitate the transfer of digital media and project data between different digital audio workstations (DAWs) and non-linear video editing (NLE) systems. Developed initially by Avid Technology, OMF allows editors and sound designers to move complex timelines containing audio tracks, clips, fades, and automation data from one software environment to another without losing the essential arrangement and editing work. It is widely used in the post-production film, television, and music industries to bridge the gap between video editing suites and dedicated audio mixing and mastering applications. Despite being an older standard that has been largely superseded by newer interchange formats like AAF (Advanced Authoring Format), OMF remains prevalent in legacy systems and specific archival workflows where cross-application compatibility is strictly required.
