GeoPackage (GPKG) is an open, standards-based, platform-independent, self-contained, and compact format for sharing spatial and geographic information. Endorsed by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), a GeoPackage file is built on top of a lightweight SQLite database container. This means it can store both vector features and tile matrix sets (raster data), as well as non-spatial tabular data, metadata, and schema definitions, all within a single, portable file. Because it relies on SQLite, a GeoPackage can be easily queried, manipulated, and transferred across different operating systems and applications without the need for complex database server setups. It is widely used in geographic information systems (GIS), mobile mapping applications, and web mapping services due to its high performance, transactional support, and ability to handle large datasets efficiently.
