A DXR file is a protected movie or animation file created using Adobe Director, which was formerly known as Macromedia Director. This file format is a 'locked' version of the standard DIR project file. When a developer completes a multimedia project, they export it as a DXR file to prevent other users from editing the source code, viewing the internal Lingo scripts, or extracting the original assets like images and audio. DXR files were widely used during the 1990s and early 2000s for creating interactive CD-ROMs, educational software, and complex web-based games. Because the content is compiled and protected, it is intended for playback only, typically through the Adobe Shockwave Player or a standalone projector application. Since Adobe officially discontinued Director in 2017 and Shockwave Player in 2019, the DXR format is now considered a legacy format. Opening these files on modern systems often requires specialized emulation software or older versions of the Windows operating system, as modern web browsers and platforms no longer support the necessary plugins.
